The intellectual work that informs activity at this level of warfare is what I define as operational art.Ĭlausewitz referenced a higher level, which he simply refers to as the next level, this is, of course the level where military activity and policy intersect, the level of strategy. This is now known as the operational level. The level above tactics is where we get into trouble-for years it was known as the strategic level, using engagements (again from Clausewitz) for the purposes of the war in a particular theater, in other words to design a framework of engagements resulting in a campaign. The actions (or creative activity) that pertains to conducting warfare at this level are tactics, and it is sometimes called the tactical level of war. At the lowest level is combat or the engagement as Clausewitz calls it. However, my definition fits operational art into a framework encompassing the levels of war. There are doctrinal definitions in places like Joint Pub 3.0 and FM 3.0 or the Army Doctrine Pub (ADP) 3.0. Lots of people love though so they must see something that I don't.Okay, this seems to be a hand grenade of sorts these days. Oh and it's kind of ugly considering how much time went into "updating" to the latest version. And sometime you're just guessing because there's a random element in there that can make battles longer or shorter so you're never sure. To me, it's a colossal PITA to try and work all that out ahead of time. If you have left over segments, then you can do some more orders etc. The game calculates how many segments are used up based on what your orders were. You move stuff and setup attacks then hit execute. Large battles take more segments than small. So if you move slow moving units and attack with them it will take more segments than faster units doing the same thing. Some thing you can do with your units, move, attack, etc., take differing amounts of segments. Each action phase has set number of segments. Movement and attack all take place in the same phase. Well, to explain it, it would first have to make sense to me.
